Seven Hills Latin in Pompeii - Summer, 2026
June 12 through 17, Pompeii and the surrounding Campania region
The large theater at Pompeii
Street in Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius
We are excited to share the Seven Hills Latin in Pompeii trip for June 2026, based in Pompeii and the surrounding Campania region. This small, family-based program is designed for students studying Latin as well as for students with a strong interest in the ancient world, offering an immersive experience of Roman history, daily life, and culture in their original setting.
One of the central goals of the trip is to allow students to encounter places they have already studied through our Latin readings and discussions, and to see how language, history, and daily life come together in a real physical space. Students will explore Roman houses, streets, and shops, speak (in Latin!) in the ancient theater, examine Latin inscriptions and graffiti, and engage with the ancient city in ways that are creative, academically serious, and memorable.
Academic Focus
The academic focus of the program will be on Pompeii and Herculaneum, with a guided visit to Mount Vesuvius. Activities will emphasize Roman daily life, archaeological history and methodology, Latin inscriptions and linguistic explorations, and the historical context of the cities in the first century CE.
The programming is appropriate for upper elementary through high school students studying Latin, as well as for students with a strong interest in the ancient world, and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend alongside their children.
Program Dates
Herculaneum
Families arrive in the Naples area on or before Friday, June 12, 2026. The program will begin that evening with a welcome dinner.
Guided activities and academic programming will take place from June 13 through June 17, concluding with a closing lunch on the final day, after which families may depart or continue independent travel.
What Is Included
The program fee includes:
Guided visits to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius with Wes and expert local guides. A one-hour pre-trip Zoom seminar for participating students, introducing the program and preparing short Latin passages for recitation in Pompeii
On-site coordination throughout the program
A welcome dinner on the first evening
A closing lunch on the final day
Wes will attend all program activities and lead the academic components in the style of Seven Hills’ creative, discussion-based approach to classical education, working alongside expert local guides.
What Is Not Included
Flights, lodging, and most meals are not included. Families will book their own flights and accommodations, allowing for flexibility in scheduling, lodging preferences, and budget.
We will provide recommendations for several hotels in Pompeii to make meeting for program activities convenient.
