Introduction to Epic Literature for Younger Kids - Registration

Meeting times: Mondays, 12-1 pm Pacific (3-4 pm Eastern), September 7 through November 23

In this course, students will journey through three ancient epics: Homer's Iliad, Homer's Odyssey, and Virgil's Aeneid. Reading and discussing selections from each book, we will encounter unforgettable characters and scenes, from Achilles on the battlefield at Troy to Odysseus outwitting the Cyclops to Aeneas's descent into the underworld.

Each week, our mythology and writing teacher, Erika, will guide students through the readings in a lively class discussion, exploring the gods, heroes, and monsters of Greek and Roman mythology. Students will dig into the larger questions these ancient poets raise: What makes someone brave? What does it mean to be a good leader, a loyal friend, or a worthy opponent? How did the Greeks and Romans understand fate, the gods, and the relationship between mortals and immortals?

Weekly assignments will invite students to respond creatively and thoughtfully to the themes, images, and ideas they encounter in the reading. No prior experience with any of the books is required, and this course is a wonderful preparation for students who want to go on to read these epics in full in one of our unabridged Epic Literature courses.
